Getting started is easy...

Need a learner's permit?

*Applicants must be at least 17 years old and have no traffic convictions in the past 12 months.

  1. Set a date to do the multiple choice Road Code test for your provisional licence by visiting an Island Traffic Authority Examination Depot or emailing driverslicence@mtw.gov.jm or dita@mtw.gov.jm

  2. Purchase a copy of the Jamaican Driver's Guide (Road Code book), sold at our office as well as local bookstores and pharmacies. Study for your test! The pass mark is 75%.

  3. Prepare the following documents to submit on your test date:

    • A completed application form (H1) for learner's permit (available at Examination Depots, tax offices and ITA's website)

    • TRN and national ID (such as voter's ID, birth certificate or passport)

    • Three(3) passport sized pictures (taken with the last 6 months and signed by a Justice of the Peace, minister of religion or police officer with rank of superintendent)

    • Proof of place of residence (form available from ITA's website)

    • Medical certificate (do a medical and have your doctor complete the form MC1, available from ITA's website)

  4. Once you pass your test, the ITA will instruct you to take all the required documents to the Tax Office, pay a fee of JMD $1800 and your learners permit will be issued to you.

Permit Expired?

  • If you were originally granted your learner's permit before January 24, 2020, you are required to do a road code test to renew it. It will be treated as if you are a first time applicant. See procedure above.

  • If you received your learner's permit since January 24, 2020 and it has now expired, simply take two passport sized photographs (signed by a Justice of the Peace) to your nearest tax office, fill out the H1 learners permit application form, pay the fee of JMD $1800 and you will be issued a new learner's permit.
